"Repetition
is the mother of skill."
Much like an athlete or musician, the visual artist must continue
to build up and maintain his or her skills through diligent
practice of the fundamental concepts of art. It is a never
ending process.
Artists
study the figure to learn how to represent it. They draw from
life because it is the only constant. Even an untrained eye
can tell when something does not represent life. Therefore
this is why we draw from it. We work to learn the anatomy
or to provide a basis for finished paintings or sculpture.
Even in more sylized media such as Comic books, cartooning,
portraiture and even non-representational arts - understanding
the human figure is crucial. You must master the rules before
you can bend them.
Unfortunately,
there are not many venues to learn the figurative arts in
West Texas, especially in an inspiring and representational
format. The Lubbock SketchClub figure-drawing group
is working to change that.
Our focus
is on representing the human form accurately. We work as a
group studying the lessons of traditional masters, applying
them to living models. This is not a class... but you will
learn. All skill levels are invited to join.
"What
to expect."

Many
artists experience frustration when they first start drawing
from life, especially if its been a while since you have tried
it or if you have never tried it. It is the hand struggling
to translate what the eye sees. It is also the eye learning
to see more than what it imagines it sees. Learning and understanding
this is a process.

The
challenge is to fall in love with that process instead
of the results. The reults are a side-effect
of learning to enjoy the struggle. Keep this in mind
as you begin. After several consistent weeks you will
start to notice how dramatically and incredibly your
skills improve. Continue the pattern, and your skills
will grow exponentially. This repetition is crucial
to growth. Being around other artists in the same
process is equally important. This is what we are
all about. We hope that you will join us.

The
SketchClub Figure drawing group meets every Wednesday
(except holidays) from 7-10pm at our studio in Hope Shalom /
Asbury Methodist church (20th and Ave T). We begin promptly
at 7 pm so be on time or early if you can help it. Park in
the back parking lot and take the fire-escape/stair case to
the third floor. The door will be open from 7-8.
The fee is $5 per session, or $16 for 4 weeks.
If you
are interested in modeling for us, or know someone that is.
We are always looking for models. This is a unique opportunity,
in a fun, professional environment, working with professional
artists. It pays $10 an hour for 3 hour sessions. But there
is a waiting list, so it may take time to get you in.
